Latest Movies 2019 | The Righteous Gemstones Season 3 Renewed At HBO | Screen Rant

HBO has picked up The Righteous Gemstones for a third season. Created by Danny McBride, the black comedy follows a family of televangelists led by widower Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) and his holier-than-thou adult children Jesse (McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam Devine). Through their network of megachurches and dubious use of church funds, the Gemstones live a lavish lifestyle. Season one of The Righteous Gemstones saw that lifestyle threatened as Jesse was blackmailed for his past sins. It also reunited the family with Eli's estranged brother-in-law, "Baby" Billy Freeman (Walton Goggins).

The comedy series reunites McBride with longtime collaborators David Gordon Green and Jody Hill. McBride and Hill co-created the HBO comedies Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, with Hill and Green serving as directors on both series. All three direct and executive produce The Righteous Gemstones. In addition to the Gemstone family, the series also stars Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Tim Baltz, and Skyler Gisondo. Goggins and Patterson are also previous McBride collaborators, having appeared on Vice Principals.

Now The Righteous Gemstones has officially been renewed at HBO, Collider confirms. David Gordon Green revealed in an interview that "we've been picked up for a third, and they want us to do another one." The director and executive producer says that The Righteous Gemstones team has begun brainstorming ideas for season three. With a sprawling ensemble cast and expansive world-building from McBride and company, the show's writers certainly have a lot of fodder for future seasons. Check out Green's full quote on the renewal news below.

“[The Righteous Gemstones is] definitely Danny's brainchild and I'd leave [the future of the show] to him, but we've been picked up for a third and they want us to do another one. So we're cooking on ideas for that right now. It is so sprawling and epic with its ensemble. The shows we've done in the past are more or less on Danny's character shoulders. Here there's a lot more than just that. That's a great attribute of it, but it's, it's pretty expansive.

And like everything, I think our ambition, we always get into things. And once we realized how difficult it is, we think, why are we doing this? Then we realized it's because we can't ignore the opportunity of imagination. There's so many shows that I think find that comfort zone. This is our formula. This is our budget, and this is the story, and these are the characters and this is how it works. And we get to go home and have a normal life. We're just not that. We're just too crazy for that. So the second we get comfortable, we think what's next? What's bigger? What's badder? What's crazier? What's unexpected?”

The season three news comes as The Righteous Gemstones season two is still being completed. The series was renewed in September 2019, but production came to a grinding halt in March 2020 after only one day of shooting. A year later, Goggins revealed a set image in April, confirming that production was back on track. Now Green says that season two "just wrapped last week," and McBride is hard at work in the editing room. The Righteous Gemstones season two is scheduled for release this winter.

While COVID-19 may have thrown a wrench in The Righteous Gemstone's scheduling, Green and McBride stayed busy with other collaborative projects. McBride co-wrote both Halloween and Halloween Kills with director David Gordon Green, and the pair teamed up again for the Halloween Ends script, which is set to release in 2022. Green also indicated several overlapping crew members for Halloween Kills and The Righteous Gemstones, including production designer Richard A. Wright and cinematographer Michael Simmonds. While Halloween Kills is undoubtedly a gruesome affair, perhaps fans of The Righteous Gemstones can sate their desire for new episodes with a darker collaboration from the creators of the comedy series.
