As the newest season of Married At First Sight unfolds, fans are learning more about the featured husbands and wives, and here's why fans are accusing Johnny Lam of expecting too much from his wife, Bao Huang Hoang. As they are the first Asian-American couple to star on Married At First Sight, viewers are eager to watch Johnny and Bao's MAFS marriage develop over the course of season 13. Unfortunately, Johnny's unachievable standards have made it impossible for Bao to succeed as his wife. This is why fans think that Johnny set his marriage up for failure.
Johnny and Bao have one of the most complicated stories in Married At First Sight history. Traditionally, the hopeful romantics that star on the experimental dating series haven't met their spouses until they are marrying them at the altar. While this has been the entire premise of the series since it started in 2014, Johnny and Bao have defied these requirements. On their wedding day, Johnny and Bao instantly recognized each other from college. Although they went to different universities, the newlyweds had met before getting married. Not only had they met before starring on Married At First Sight season 13, but Johnny had ghosted Bao years before they tied the knot on reality TV.
Viewers have been skeptical about Johnny and Bao's chances of making their relationship work the second time around. One reason why fans aren't sold on the couple is Johnny's expectations for Bao. Johnny wants his wife to meet standards that he doesn't hold himself to. For example, Johnny called Bao out for snoring during the night. Bao expressed to him that her snoring was a sensitive issue that she didn't want to talk about, and Johnny took that personally. Instead of allowing Bao to be human and get upset about a problem that he was pointing out on national television, Johnny expected Bao to just let it go. If Johnny was less judgmental and didn't hold Bao to such high standards, they might not be a couple that Married At First Sight fans criticize.
Another requirement of Johnny's that viewers think is unrealistic is his expectation that Bao shower as much as he does. Bao noted that Johnny showers a few times a day and revealed that she sometimes showers only a few times a week. Bao confessed that she gets lazy and tired after going to the gym. When she does, she prefers to sleep on the couch instead of showering before bed. While many fans were turned off by Bao's admission, Johnny's response left much to be desired as well. Johnny asked if Bao could at least rinse off. He then added that he didn't want to be worried about whether or not Bao was clean "down there," which offended viewers. Johnny shouldn't expect his wife to change her entire routine in order to prepare her body for him. This awkward conversation is one reason why Johnny and Bao from MAFS might not last.
Johnny is entitled to have his own standards, but fans think he is asking too much of his new wife Bao. From judging her insecurities to wanting her to shower on his schedule, Johnny isn't allowing Bao to just be herself. Although all Married At First Sight fans are rooting for him and Bao, Johnny might have to lower his expectations if he wants to make his marriage work.
