The Expendables 4 is officially in the works at Lionsgate, and it will feature a number of returning stars and characters from the earlier films. The first Expendables, written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, released in 2010 as bloody homage to the beloved 1980s and 1990s era of action movies. Two sequels followed in 2012 and 2014, each bringing in more and more stars of the genre’s heyday, as well as some younger faces.
Stallone has been teasing The Expendables 4 for a long time, but now it’s finally officially in the works. With seven years having passed since the release of The Expendables 3 – a film that effectively retired the old mercenary squad – it should be interesting to see what kind of story Stallone decides to tell this time around. The whole idea for the franchise was a major throwback in 2010, and it’s even more of one now.
Fortunately, several original Expendables actors have already been confirmed to be returning in The Expendables 4. They’ll be joined by some new additions to the franchise, and possibly by some other older action stars who could still be in negotiations to appear. Heres every past star and character returning in The Expendables 4.
As the creator and leader of the Expendables franchise in real life, it’s no surprise that Stallone is returning to play veteran mercenary Barney Ross in The Expendables 4. Ross got through the first three movies by the skin of his teeth, always managing to blast his way out of whatever sticky situation he and his team happened to find themselves in. The character is emblematic of Stallone’s extensive role in the action genre, and it should be great to see him on the big screen once again.
Jason Statham will be joining Stallone in The Expendables 4, reprising his role as the group’s number two, Lee Christmas. It was previously rumored that Christmas would be the subject of an Expendables spinoff film, and it sounds like he'll be the main protagonist in the new film, which makes sense given that he is a good deal younger than most of the other stars of the franchise. Statham is sure to deliver more of the taught and exciting action set pieces he’s been known for throughout his career in The Expendables 4.
Another star who appeared as far back as the original Expendables, Dolph Lundgren is coming back to play the towering Gunner Jensen. Lundgren and Stallone last appeared together in Creed II, reprising their classic roles of Ivan Drago and Rocky Balboa. Lundgren is one of the most iconic action stars of the 1980s and 1990s to be sure, and as an original member of the squad, it’s great to see him coming back for The Expendables 4.
The final returning actor and character confirmed for The Expendables 4 is former MMA fighter Randy Couture as Toll Road. Like the other three returning stars, Couture first appeared in the original Expendables and returned in both sequels. It’s possible that other stars like Terry Crews, Jet Li, or Arnold Schwarzenegger could return in The Expendables 4 as well, but for now, the film at least has a strong core four confirmed.
