Latest Movies 2019 | Harry Potter: 5 Teachers Who Were Too Nasty (And 5 Who Were Too Nice)

Just like any school, Hogwarts has some good teachers—and some bad ones, too. Harry Potter encountered all sorts of life throughout his time at the magical castle, and, though he made some good friends along the way, he also found himself regularly in trouble with professors. And, on occasions, getting praise from them.

So, we'll now take a look at five teachers who were far too nice for their own good, as well as some who were far too nasty. Starting with somebody you'd expect to be on this list...

10 Nice: Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore is a great man, of that there's no questioning. He was always able to see the good in people and would often look at them with a twinkle in his eye. The Hogwarts headmaster was somebody who turned down the Minister of Magic gig just so he can ensure young wizards and witches received the right education they require to go far in life.

But, he was too nice for his own good, especially when it came to Tom Riddle. He knew from the very start that he'd met a dark wizard in the making and also had suspicions he was behind the opening of the Chamber of Secrets the first time around. However, rather than do the right thing and take out Tom before he could commit mass murder on a large scale, Albus instead chose to bury his head in the sand.

9 Nasty: Quirinus Quirrell

When Harry first meets Quirinus Quirrell in Diagon Alley, he believes he's met a timid, shy, and nervous individual. By the end of the Sorcerer's Stone book and movie, however, he knows he's got the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher all wrong.

Quirrell is actually an ally of Lord Voldemort, having met the villain during his travels in Albania. They team up and the Hogwarts Professor agrees to conceal him in the back of his own head in a rather disgusting revelation. He pays the price for picking the wrong side, with Voldemort leaving him to die after he fails to obtain the stone his master craves.

8 Nice: Rubeus Hagrid

The phrase "gentle giant" existed well before the Harry Potter franchise, but it's a description that fits Rubeus Hagrid to a tee. The Care of Magical Creatures teacher is a lovely character, one who always looks out for the students. Unfortunately, his niceness makes him a source of ridicule.

If Hagrid was fiercer, pupils would fall into line with every order. However, because he's soft on them, the likes of Draco Malfoy and the whole of Slytherin house often look to take advantage of him, which is definitely unfair.

7 Nasty: Severus Snape

Of course, Severus Snape was always destined to be on this list. Unless you're in Slytherin house, chances are he'll try and make your time at Hogwarts a living hell: like he does to Harry Potter, Neville Longbottom, and numerous other students during his time as Potions Master and Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Whether he's taking snide pops at Harry, or just flat-out bullying Neville, Snape is a repulsive character. And, while we know he's a hero, we still find it baffling Harry names one of his children after him. Would you really name your offspring after somebody who made your life a nightmare for six years? We definitely wouldn't.

6 Nice: Horace Slughorn

Sure, Horace Slughorn is only really nice to his favorites, but this is a weak spot of his nonetheless, and something Tom Riddle uses to suit his own interests during his time at Hogwarts.

Riddle approaches Slughorn and asks him about Horcruxes in a scene we see in the Half-Blood Prince movie. Keen to further the mind of the talented youngster, the Hogwarts Potions Master willingly gives up information that's crucial to the villain. He appears to learn his lesson, however, and isn't as chummy with his students when he returns to the school to replace Severus Snape.

5 Nasty: Dolores Umbridge

In Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts, he encounters a teacher even more loathsome than Severus Snape, somebody who makes the Potions Master look positively lovely. Dolores Umbridge is her name, and she's a character so vile even Lord Voldemort may have struggled to get on with her.

Not only does she undermine the authority of Albus Dumbledore, but she's also guilty of sending Dementors to attack Harry, torturing students using a horrible quill, insulting Centaurs, bullying Hagrid, and much, much more. She somehow remains a Ministry of Magic employee after her nightmare spell at Hogwarts, but, thankfully, is incarcerated in Azkaban following Voldemort's demise.

4 Nice: Remus Lupin

How we wish we'd had a teacher like Remus Lupin at our school. He joins Hogwarts in Harry's third year and is a brilliant Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, taking a hands-on approach to the subject and helping to further and improve the minds of the young witches and wizards who sit in his classroom.

Unfortunately, Lupin's another who is too nice for his own good. He allows Snape to pick on him, lets students mock him for his grubby attire and gives up his position merely because he feels parents want him gone. Remus is a brilliant individual, and that makes his death in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 all the more tragic.

3 Nasty: The Carrows

While all of Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers had some negative aspects to them, the Carrows are potentially the worst of the lot.

They're put into position at Hogwarts during the events of the Deathly Hallows book and attempt to install their horrific mindsets into the brains of the children they teach. They even turn the subject they teach into just the Dark Arts and encourage pupils to torture each other for practice. It's the only class Crabbe, Draco Malfoy's thuggish sidekick, ever excelled in.

2 Nice: Minerva McGonagall

Okay, sure, Minerva McGonagall was often strict and very much adopted a "tough love" policy with her students, even if they're part of her own house.

But, one particular instance springs to mind when she was too nice. In the Order of the Phoenix book, she jumps to the aid of Hagrid, despite knowing it would leave the students under the control of Dolores Umbridge. This act of bravery backfires, and she's sent to St Mungo's hospital with serious injuries after multiple stunning spells hit her in the chest. This leaves the school at the mercy of Umbridge, albeit only temporarily, with Dumbledore taking back over after she's forced to quit.

1 Nasty: Barty Crouch Jr

In many ways, Barty Crouch Jr was actually a pretty good Hogwarts teacher while acting as Alastor Moody, the famous Auror. He gave Neville Longbottom confidence, helped Harry Potter make his way through the Triwizard Tournament and stuck up to those who were bullied by Draco Malfoy.

But, the fact that he's a Death Eater means he couldn't escape from this list. Crouch Jr even attempts to murder Harry at Hogwarts following the boy's escape from Voldemort, though he's fortunately stopped. He ends up having his soul sucked out of his mouth via the Dementors of Azkaban and lived the rest of his life being nothing but an empty shell.
