Typically totally mute and stoic beyond compare, most of the protagonists in From Software's so-called Soulsborne series are devoid of personality and character. Yet, though they lack charisma, they all bear incredible burdens; the fate of cities, kingdoms, and worlds rests upon their shoulders, with chaos and destruction all but assured should they fail to complete their quests.
From the Slayer of Demons destined to confront an old god to an ashen husk resurrected to do in death what he could not in life, Soulsborne protagonists wield a near-unparalleled level of strength. Were they to battle each other, it's hard to say who would come out on top.
6 Bearer of the Curse (Dark Souls 2)
Brought to the kingdom of Drangelic by a desire to break the curse of the undead, the Bearer of the Curse must quest to find King Vendrick, collecting the souls of four Great Ones along the way. In the end, depending on their actions, they must defeat Vendrick, Nashandra, and Aldia and either claim the Throne of Want or abandon it.
While the protagonists of all three Dark Souls games embark on very similar missions, the Bearer of the Curse likely has it the easiest. Dark Souls 2 doesn't have many truly epic boss encounters, and theirs is likely the least impactful journey in terms of narrative.
5 Slayer of Demons (Demon's Souls)
Tasked by the Monumental with lulling an elder god back to slumber once again, the Slayer of Demons embarked on a long journey that would set a precedent for FromSoft's Soulsborne series.
Facing fearsome enemies such as the Flamelurker, the Dragon God, and Old King Doran, the Slayer of Demons is unquestionably skilled. Yet, their adventure never quite reaches the heights of games like Dark Souls or Bloodborne, and, while Old King Allant puts up a respectable fight, the Slayer of Demons' true final boss encounter is a literal pushover. An additional slight gripe, chomping on grass to heal isn't nearly as elegant as taking a sip from an Estus flask.
4 Chosen Undead (Dark Souls)
Initially locked within the Undead Asylum, Dark Souls' Chosen Undead makes a pilgrimage to the land of Lordran and embarks on a quest to break the curse of the undead. Besting baddies like Abysswalker Artorias and the infamous Ornstein and Smough, the Chosen Undead bears an incredible amount of power, eventually conquering Gwyn and either linking the first flame or allowing it to fade.
That said, their journey is padded by unchallenging bosses such as the Bed of Chaos and Pinwheel, and they're unable to effectively dual-wield weapons or perform weapon arts. They repeatedly persevere in the face of almost certain defeat and set the stage for the next two games in the trilogy, but they likely wouldn't be able to stand up to some of the series' other destined warriors.
3 Sekiro (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice)
The odd-one-out in terms of FromSoft protagonists, Sekiro is a well-defined character with an established personality and background. A skilled shinobi tasked with protecting—and then ending—a divine lineage, Sekiro overcomes the loss of his arm, adapting a prosthetic limb and a set of new tools into his offensive repertoire.
Sekiro's combat style is wildly different when compared to other Soulslike lead characters. Focused on poise and posture and uninhibited by a stamina system, The Wolf would make for a very fearsome opponent in a one-on-one fight. He's also able to self-ressurect after defeat, making him all the more intimidating to the bosses he faces in Shadows Die Twice.
2 Ashen One (Dark Souls 3)
Failing to link the fire eons ago, Dark Souls 3's protagonist was burned to ash and resurrected when the first flame was again threatened. Going up against some of the series' most difficult bosses like Slave Knight Gael, Darkeater Midir, and the Nameless King, the Ashen One is tasked with returning absconded lords to their thrones and linking the first flame.
Regardless of the outcome of their mission, the Ashen One is certainly the most powerful of the Dark Souls protagonists. With an incredible arsenal of unique weaponry and the ability to make use of weapon arts—to say nothing of the many miracles and spells at their disposal—they would be nigh-on unstoppable at the height of their power.
1 The Hunter (Bloodborne)
After traveling to the cursed city of Yharnam to undergo a blood transfusion, the Hunter finds themselves the prey of hunting parties patrolling the city hoping to drive out humans who have been transformed into beasts. After escaping, they make their way to Byrgenworth where they experience a revelation regarding the cosmic terror accosting the land. What's more, if certain conditions are met, the Hunter is reborn as a great one themselves during the game's final sequence, likely inheriting power beyond imagination in the process.
Possessing agility unparalleled and the only Soulsborne protagonist capable of wielding a firearm, the Hunter is certainly the most powerful main character of FromSoft's recent release lineup. Able to call on powers beyond for aid and made to do battle against almost unimaginably domineering forces like the Moon Presence and the Orphan of Kos—or some say Kosm—the Hunter is definitively FromSoft's mightiest protagonist.
