In the 1980s, Wonder Woman's signature outfit underwent some major change. While it still largely resembled her traditional outfit, it made several adjustments. Now, Wonder Woman #778 has brought this outfit back for a journey through the 5th Dimension.
The animated series Justice League, which ran from 2001 to 2004, used a costume for Wonder Woman that closely resembled her 1980s look. This has now become one of Wonder Woman's signature and most recognizable outfits and now it's back in Wonder Woman #778 from Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain, and Pat Brosseau.
Wonder Woman's chase of Janus - a Roman deity who has split in half - has led her to the 5th Dimension. There, she meets Batmite and Mr. Mxyzptlk, who she teams up with. Her journey through different realms has provided her with new outfits to match the worlds, which include Valhalla, Elfhame, and Gemworld. Now, her latest outfit places her back in her Bronze Age of comic books.
Wonder Woman's outfit in this issue keeps her traditional boots, Royal Tiara, and her silver gauntlets. However, it makes adjustments to her emblem and bodysuit. Before the 1980s, when in her classic outfit, Wonder Woman had a golden eagle as her main symbol. During the Bronze Age, she traded the eagle for a golden "W," which is now regularly part of her costume. The emblem on her film counterpart blends both insignia, while mostly keeping the "W' shape. In the comic, she also gets a golden waistband, which differs from her 1950s white waistband. Instead of a skirt, she has a leotard cut bottom on her bodysuit, which still has a more stream-lined star-spangled pattern.
This outfit has become synonymous with the character into the 2000s, and it is especially fitting that it reappears in a world that is rather cartoonish. After all, Wonder Woman's animated appearance defined the character for a generation of young fans. Her costume in this issue keeps essential elements of her original costume while bringing back the updates the 1980s brought to her look.
Wonder Woman's update was very much welcome and it has resulted in one of the most iconic costumes in comic book history. Currently, the Goddess of Truth has been trying to find her role in the Multiverse following her Dark Nights: Death Metal sacrifice to defeat the Batman Who Laughs. It only makes sense that Wonder Woman's outfit would follow her journey, leading her through who she has been to who she will soon be in DC's newest initiative.
