Latest Movies 2019 | Sony Buying Bluepoint Games Is Bad News For MGS Fans

After accidentally confirming an acquisition under the PlayStation Studios umbrella a few months ago, Sony has officially brought Bluepoint Games into the fold. Bluepoint has previously been responsible for such exclusive remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, and has worked closely with Sony throughout its history, putting its mark on other beloved PlayStation IP like Uncharted and God of War in the form of remasters and ports. With this acquisition, though, Bluepoint appears poised to expand its horizons, which bodes ill for those hoping for a Metal Gear Solid remake.

Over the last 15 years or so, Bluepoint Games has been steadily building a reputation as masters of remakes. The studio successfully ported, remastered, and remade a number of games, with the most recent two - Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls - releasing to widespread acclaim. Late last year, rumors began swirling that Bluepoint would be tackling a Metal Gear Solid remake following the release of Demon's Souls. Though nothing more than hearsay, the rumors at least seemed plausible. Bluepoint appeared to have been taking on increasingly ambitious projects, and taking a stab at the beloved 1998 PlayStation title looked like it could be a logical next step.

The acquisition of Bluepoint Games by Sony has dashed hopes for a Metal Gear Solid remake - at least for now. In an interview with IGN, Bluepoint president Marco Thrush and head of Sony's SIE Worldwide Studios Hermen Hulst revealed that Bluepoint's next project is "original content." Details are still scarce, and "original content" leaves a lot of wiggle room even outside of the blurred lines between remakes and remasters. It's an issue of semantics, but "original content" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as "original IP." It's possible Bluepoint Games could again be working within an established PlayStation universe, but either way, it seems likely that a remake of Metal Gear Solid is off the table.

2015's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the last mainline entry in the series. Konami developed Metal Gear Survive, which released in 2018, but the series has grown stagnant since the less than friendly departure of Hideo Kojima and the Kojima Productions development studio. Without the visionary writer and director attached, many series fans might not even want an MGS6 from Konami, and there have been no indications of plans to develop one. Although the stealth gameplay of MGSV is brilliant, the clearly unfinished and rushed second half of the game's story is a disappointing epilogue for the landmark series.

The best hope for a quality Metal Gear Solid release was the rumored remake. Coming off the release of Demon's Souls last year, Bluepoint had two impressive remakes under its belt, and MGS seemed like a natural next step. Revamping the classic PlayStation title could have been a lot of work, with possibly more gameplay changes than either the Shadow of the Colossus or Demon's Souls remakes. Unfortunately for Metal Gear Solid fans, the Sony acquisition of Bluepoint Games appears to have put the series back on ice for the time being.
