For as highly entertaining as Grand Theft Auto 5 remains to this day, serious gamers and fans of the franchise alike will all attest to how exasperating it is to defeat its most difficult missions. The wildly popular open-world game is so limitless in its rules, laws, and social mores that it is hindered by giant roadblocks presented in certain missions makes the overall experience much tougher but also far more rewarding once they're defeated.

While gamers tend to vary in their skillset, most are in accord when it comes to the most challenging tasks to complete in Grand Theft Auto 5. Patience, physical stamina, mental endurance, and a whole lot of gunfire are required to overcome the game's biggest hurdles.

10 Friend Request

For the simple-sounding first mission given to Michael De Santa, Friend Request is way more challenging than it would seem. The goal is to secretly bomb the Lifeinvader office, but Michael is required to do some annoying IT maintenance on a computer console. Specifically, he must close a viral onslaught of pop-up windows in a mere 32 seconds.

Moreover, antivirus software does more harm than good, requiring Michael to employ his time-slowing skills to complete the task in time. For the first mission, it's a real chore to get through and one that doesn't really have an impact on the rest of the game's narrative.

9 Bury The Hatchet

One of the most challenging combat missions includes Bury the Hatchet, which reunites Trevor and Michael as they discover the shocking death of their mutual friend Brad, setting up Michael's traitorous ways. When Wei Cheng's heavily-armed thugs storm the two in the cemetery, the onslaught is nearly impossible to fend off without dying.

What makes the mission so hard is the lack of firepower at Michael's disposal to defend himself and fight back. Armed with a single pistol, the relentless bombardment of Cheng's weaponized goons is simply too much to handle in a one-on-one battle.

8 Scouting The Port

Scouting the Port is not only one of the hardest missions, it's also one of the least enjoyable. The goal for Trevor is to disguise himself as a stevedore and search the harbor for priceless items worth stealing. Tedious, boring, with very little fun to offer, the mission is nearly impossible to complete the first time around.

The major difficulty of the mission comes from finding the patience for Trevor to use a crane to lift various cargo containers in search of valuable items. The kicker? One must move the containers around the port without damaging anyone or anything in the process. It's a deceptively hard task to complete and one that requires perhaps too much patience for gamers eager to explore the game's vast world.

7 Did Someone Say Yoga?

Perhaps the most notorious mission in the game is Did Someone Say Yoga? The nonsensical task is another grating endurance trial that severely tests the patience of its players. As fans of the game can attest, patience is the last thing they want to exercise when playing such a hyper-kinetic game. Moreover, it makes no sense that GTA 5's tough-guy protagonist Trevor would indulge in yoga.

So simple in theory yet surprisingly difficult to complete, the entire mission is comprised of Michael doing the proper stretching and breathing techniques which are extremely hard to control. Worse, in order to attain the Gold Medal, the mission must be completed successfully three times in a row during the minigame.

6 The Triathlons

While the previous two missions challenge a player's patience, the Triathlons challenge a player's physical stamina and long-term endurance. Without a 100% stamina ranking going in, the last leg of the mission is impossible to defeat. After completing the Alamo Sea Triathlon, GTA 5 fans may not know that the game unlocks The Coyote Cross Country Triathlon, which consists of running, swimming, and cycling for 30 straight minutes across nearly the entire map. The hidden game mission is not only impossible to defeat without perfect stamina but having to start over provides endless headaches.

5 Minor Turbulence

Minor Turbulence is a mission that requires Trevor to go rogue, fly a crop duster plane into enemy airspace to Fort Zancudo undetected. While that is hard enough, having to steal a second plane with enemies in hot pursuit doubles the difficulty.

What really makes the mission so hard is the same thing that often plagues air missions. The awkward, heavy aircraft are extremely hard to control and guide with accuracy, making it very easy for enemies to shoot Trevor down before he can escape unharmed.

4 Mini-Sub

Similar to Minor Turbulence, the difficulty of Trevor successfully navigating the clunky mini-submarine before approaching the Merryweather Heist is the bane of the player's existence in the Mini-Sub mission. Although it's a preamble for the heist, it's one of the most memorable missions in GTA 5 that doesn't involve a crime.

The whole mission consists of pilfering a mini-sub without being caught and practicing how to drive it underwater in the lead up to the aforesaid heist. Tooling around in the sub is so cumbersome and unnavigable that it makes players want to give up and quit the game on the spot.

3 The Bureau Raid (Roof Entry)

The Roof Entry portion of The Bureau Raid mission is one of the coolest but hardest GTA 5 missions. The goal is to jump out of an airplane and skillfully manipulate the parachute in order to land precisely on top of the roof in question. This alone is enthralling but almost impossible to do in one attempt.

Afterward, Franklin and Michael must infiltrate a highly secured federal building, hack into the mainframe and download a bank access code, then blast their way through a cordon of police. While it helps to have multiple players, the breadth of mission alone makes it very hard to beat.

2 Derailed

Derailed is a mission given to both Michael and Trevor in GTA 5, with a large part of the difficulty coming from having to switch between the two characters during the mission. The goal for Trevor is to steal a train and deliberately crash it into an oncoming train so they can obtain the priceless payload.

As Michael is off finding a boat, the hardest part of the mission is timing Trevor's jump right at the moment the two trains collide and on top of one of the moving trains while on a dirt bike. Even if Trevor nails the choreography, he must fend off hordes of armed baddies once the mysterious payload is obtained. While difficult to complete, this mission is ultimately rewarding as it shows why GTA 5 is one of the best open world video games due to its clever use of a fully interactive location.

1 The Big Score (Obvious Approach)

Most GTA 5 fans will say that The Big Score is not only the hardest mission in the game but also the enjoyable. As the grand finale of heist missions the game has to offer, the mission requires going out with a hail of gunfire into a throng of heavily armed cops and security guards on the highest alert possible.

The Obvious Approach mode of the mission increases the difficulty level, adding zig-zagging roads that are very hard to navigate and lead players right into extremely violent dead-end shootouts that are simply impossible to defeat in the first attempt. As the final mission of the game, it's only right The Big Score is the hardest mission of all.
