Jamie Tartt leaves his spot on Manchester City at the beginning of Ted Lasso season 2 to anger his abusive father, but there could be more to the star player’s decision to return to AFC Richmond. Jamie’s ego and disregard for others made him something of a pariah in season 1, but he started to improve after Ted repeated displays of encouragement and support. Unfortunately, Jamie was recalled to Man City before he fully overcame his demons.
At the start of Ted Lasso season 2, Jamie is a contestant on the Love Island spoof show Lust Conquers All, where he is eventually disqualified. He then learns that, due to his caustic reputation, Man City is uninterested in taking him back, and rather than continue his empty reality TV career, Jamie asks Ted if he can return to AFC Richmond. In their chat, Jamie tells Ted that he left Man City in the first place to frustrate his emotionally abusive father, who constantly berates Jamie after his games. However, the star’s reason for leaving his team might be more complicated.
Jamie was clearly responding positively to Ted’s encouragement by the end of season 1. Even after he was recalled to Manchester City, Ted’s influence was seen when Jamie made an extra pass to help defeat the team AFC Richmond at the end of the season – something Ted previously pushed him to do. Jamie’s had a lack of positive male role models in his life, but that doesn’t make him a bad person, and while he’s not the most reflective person in the world by any means, he may have realized subconsciously that the best version of himself came out while he was playing under Ted.

It’s possible that Jamie intentionally, albeit not entirely consciously, sabotaged his relationship with Man City to give him an excuse to return to AFC Richmond in Ted Lasso season 2. He’s rejected Ted’s kindness in the past, but he also understands deep down that it was sincere – something Jamie hasn’t experienced all that much in his own life. Even in season 1, he seemed disappointed to have been recalled by Man City, as if he realized that staying with Ted would have made him happier in the long run.
Surely, Jamie’s complicated relationship with his father played a role in his decision to leave Man City, but it was likely also a self-preserving move to inch back towards AFC Richmond, where Jamie liked himself a little bit more. It will take some time for the rest of the team – most of whom despise him – to adjust to his return. But with luck, he can help the club break its stretch of draws and finally start getting some wins in Ted Lasso season 2.
