Venom: Let There Be Carnage will have to give the villain symbiote a different origin to the one in the comics, but it can still make Carnage into Venom’s son. The alien symbiote Venom had its big-screen debut in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace playing Eddie Brock, but it didn’t have the success the studio was expecting. The movie was packed with villains and subplots, and visually, Venom just wasn’t the character fans wanted to see. Luckily, Eddie and Venom got a second chance years later and got their own solo movie, now with Tom Hardy as the lead.
Venom tells the origin story of the title character, from its arrival on Earth to its bonding with journalist Eddie Brock during an investigation of the experiments at Life Foundation involving humans and symbiotic life form. When the symbiote bonds with Eddie, it manifests around his body as a monstrous creature and grants him some special abilities, such as enhanced physical strength. Together they go after Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), leader of the Life Foundation, and Riot, the symbiote he bonded with. Although Venom wasn’t well-received by critics, it was a big box office hit, prompting Sony to greenlight a sequel, titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
The mid-credits scene in Venom teased the arrival of Carnage, another symbiote who in the comics famously bonded with serial killer Cletus Kasady. The scene in question saw Eddie Brock back in action as a journalist and arriving at San Quentin prison to interview Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who warned him that “there’s gonna be carnage”. It was later confirmed that Kasady and Carnage will be the villains of Venom 2 (made obvious some time later with the reveal of the movie’s official title), but given that the first movie gave Eddie and the symbiote a different story than in the comics, Carnage’s origins will surely be different as well, but the symbiotes could still be father-and-son in some way.
During Eddie Brock’s storyline in the comics, Venom got him into a lot of trouble. The two bonded after Brock sank into a deep depression that had him contemplating suicide, and while he sought solace at the church where Spider-Man repelled the symbiote, Venom sensed Brock’s hatred for the web-slinger, and thus bonded with him. Together they fought Spider-Man many times, with Venom repeatedly trying to kill Parker, no matter if he was in costume or not. At one point during their many fights and crimes, Eddie ended up in jail, with Venom helping him escape and leaving a spawn – Carnage.
During this time, Venom had other offsprings – Riot, Agony, Phage, Lasher, and Scream – but Carnage’s bonding with Kasady is what has made him not only the most memorable of Venom’s children but also the deadliest one, and an often enemy of both Spider-Man and Venom. Due to the symbiote’s alien mindset, Venom held no emotional attachment to Carnage, and though it can sense and track all of its offsprings, Carnage learned how to block this ability after bonding with Kasady, thus making it an even bigger threat.
In the comics, during a fight against Styx and Stone and Spider-Man, Venom was badly injured and disengaged from Eddie Brock, who was then sent to Ryker’s Island Prison. Venom continued to be attached to Eddie (in spirit instead of body), and once it healed, it helped Eddie escape – and that’s when it left an offspring at the prison. Kasady was Brock’s cellmate, so it was easy for Carnage to bond with him, thus making the symbiote more violent, powerful, and deadly than Venom.
Now, Eddie Brock wasn’t sent to prison in Venom, and by the end of the movie, he was making his come back in journalism and continued to be bonded to Venom, unbeknownst to those around him, especially Anne Weying (Michelle Williams), his ex-fiancée. As Riot’s origin in Venom was also different from the one in the comics, Carnage’s will also have to be different, simply because Eddie Brock and Venom are free, while Kasady is in prison.
Although Eddie Brock, Venom, and Cletus Kasady are in different places, there are still ways in which Carnage can be Venom’s son in Venom 2. The simplest one and also the closest to the comic books would be Venom leaving an offspring during one of Brock’s interviews with Kasady, though the exact reason why it would leave it there is a mystery, as Venom changed its plans of destruction after bonding with Eddie. Another possibility, and very different from the source material, is Venom creating its offspring so it can bond with Michelle Williams’ Anne Weying – after all, Venom already did so in the first movie so they could free Brock after he was captured by Drake’s people.
As all of the symbiotes brought to Earth in Venom died (except for good old Venom, of course), it’s unknown where Carnage will come from, but there’s still a possibility that he will be Venom’s son, just like in the comics – what remains a mystery is Venom’s reasons for having an offspring now that it had a change of heart. Ultimately, fans will get to see the Venom vs Carnage battle they have been expecting since the first movie was announced, and their rivalry will surely be heightened by the connection between them.
